Website Design Roadmap

01

Discovery

The right questions make all the difference. So before anything else, I want to know everything. Your work, your clients, what you want people to feel the moment they land on your page. After you fill out this website design brief, we can schedule a discovery call and take it from there.

02

Research & Direction

Then I do my homework. I'm looking at your industry, your audience, and your competitors. Looking for a unique positioning opportunity for your business. Then we decide on a direction together before I start building.

04

Alignment

Next, I present a mood board to make sure we're on the same page before I move into the design. If we're not, here's where we fix that and come again. This step saves us both time and money.

05

Design & Build

This is where it all comes to life. I design your website for desktop first, then carefully optimize for mobile. Every page is built with intention and guides your ideal client gently where you want them to go.

06

Iteration

You get to see it, spend some time with it, and let me know what needs to change. Feedback happens in structured rounds so we move efficiently. No endless back and forth. We refine until it's right.

07

Launch & Handover

The moment we've all been waiting for, we go live! Your domain's connected, SEO basics in place, and everything tested. Then I walk you through your site so you know exactly how to manage it yourself. Don't worry. You get a recording so you can refer back to it anytime. And I offer website support, so you won't be left to figure things out on your own.

08

Ongoing Support

Your site is live but the journey doesn't end there. The Care Plan keeps me in your corner for updates, tweaks, and whatever comes next as your business grows.

What this looks like in practice

A Portfolio Build for Simone - Instructional Designer

OSV6DU1.png

About the client

Simone is an instructional designer who creates scenario-based e-learning experiences and training programs. She had a strong point of view, a well-developed mock project to showcase her work, and a clear sense of the kind of organizations she wanted to work with.

What she needed was a site that communicated all of that. In a way that was clear, confident, and with the same minimalist sensibility she brings to everything she does.

The brief

Simone needed a portfolio site that would do the heavy lifting in her job search. She wanted to attract learning and development teams at forward-thinking organizations, give them a clear picture of how she works and what she values, and make it easy for the right people to reach out.

The site also needed to showcase her featured project in enough depth that a hiring manager could follow the full process from problem to outcome.

The challenge

Most instructional design portfolios look the same. Corporate colors, generic layouts, a list of tools and competencies. Simone wasn't that, and we didn't want her site to be either. The challenge was to build something that felt distinctly like her while still being professional and easy to navigate. Simple without being sparse, and personal without being self-indulgent.

The approach

Discovery

First, I wanted to understand Simone. Not just what she did, but how she thought. What drew her to instructional design. What she believed about how people learn. What she wanted someone to feel sixty seconds after landing on her page.

That conversation gave me clarity and made everything else easier.

Research & Direction

With a clear sense of her taste, values, and approach, the direction came naturally. Taking a different approach from the typical learning designer's portfolio, we used muted earth tones, simple, elegant fonts that felt approachable rather than corporate, icons and imagery that felt consistent with the same theme: clean, considered, human.

I put together a mood board to get her eyes on the direction before anything was built. We went back and forth on a few details, mainly around color and imagery, and once we were aligned, I began the build.

The solution

Design & Build

For Simone, the focus is always simplicity, no fluff, no fuss. The homepage introduced her immediately and personally, so a visitor knew within seconds who she was and what she was about.

Her featured project, a scenario-based e-learning experience designed for a restaurant chain, got its own dedicated page with the full story: the problem, the approach, the process, and the outcome. Enough detail for a discerning hiring manager to follow her thinking from start to finish.

The "What I Offer" section framed her skills as values: empathy, transparency, resourcefulness, attention to detail. Because how she works matters as much as what she produces. She wanted anyone visiting to get a real sense of who they'd be working with, not just what she could deliver.

Review & Refine

This is where the real collaboration happened. Simone had a good eye and clear instincts, and we went through several rounds of feedback together, adjusting copy, tweaking hierarchy, and refining the flow between pages until everything felt right. Not just good enough, but actually right.

This back and forth is something I build into every project. It's not an inconvenience, it's part of the process.

Most clients don't know exactly what they want until they can see and react to something, and that's completely fine. My job is to stay patient, stay curious, and keep refining until the site feels genuinely like yours.

The result

Launch & Handover

Simone came away with a site she was genuinely confident sharing. Something that felt categorically hers. Within days of launch, she landed her first instructional design role.

After launch, I managed the site on her behalf for a period while she settled into her new job, until she was ready to take it over herself.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Right here. Fill in the inquiry form or send me a message and we'll set up a discovery call. We'll figure out what you need, whether we're a good fit, and what happens next.

  • It depends on what you need, but that's why we'd best talk first. That said, here's a rough guide:

    • Basic online presence (up to 5 pages): $1000

    • Business website (up to 9 pages): $2500

    • Custom Website (up to 12 pages + integrations and more): $3800

After our discovery call I'll send you a detailed proposal with everything broken down clearly. For now, there's a bit more detailed in my packages section

  • I use Wix, and I love it for what it does. It's flexible enough to build something beautiful and custom, but simple enough that you can manage it yourself once I hand it over. It requires no coding, there's no mystery, you won't have to be calling me every time you want to update a photo.

  • Think of hosting as the rent you pay to keep your site live on the internet. Without it your site doesn't exist. Wix handles all of that for you, it's built into your monthly plan, so there's no separate server to set up or technical stuff to figure out. You just pay Wix directly, usually around $17–$27 a month, and everything runs. That's it.

(Wix monthly fees aren't included in my design price)

  • Your domain name is your address on the internet. It's the thing people type to find you. Like reneemahrun.com. And yes, you definitely need one.

If you already have one, great. We'll connect it to your new site. If not, I'll walk you through getting one. It takes about 10 minutes and usually costs around $10–$20 a year.

  • Always. Every site I build is optimized for mobile before it goes anywhere near a launch button. Most of your visitors will likely be using their phones, and a site that falls apart on mobile is no bueno. So yes. It'll look good.

  • The more prepared you are, the smoother everything goes. Here's and idea of what I'll need from you:

    • Your logo (SVG or high-res PNG if you have it)

    • Brand colors and fonts (if you have them — if not, we'll sort it)

    • Written content for each page

    • Photos (headshots and any brand imagery)

    • Examples of sites you love and loathe

    • 50% deposit of the price I quoted you

If you don't have everything ready, fret not! We'll figure out what's missing on the discovery call and make a plan together.

  • Sure. Wix has a built-in members area that works really well for coaches. Your clients can log in, access resources, connect to your booking system, or link through to your course platform. It's included in the my Custom Website package and can be added on to the other packages too.

  • Sure, I can refresh your site. I can't give an exact price for that without seeing what I'd be working with, but the refresh price starts at $500.

  • Life happens and I get that. If something comes up, just let me know (the earlier the better). I'd much rather know than have things go quiet and lose momentum. There is a restart fee if a project goes on pause beyond 2 months, though. This will be noted in your proposal.

  • We celebrate! And then I make sure you actually know how to use the thing. Every project ends with a handover walkthrough where I show you around your site, walk you through making updates, and make sure you feel confident managing it yourself. It's recorded so you can come back to it whenever you need a reminder.

And if the idea of managing it yourself makes you want to take a nap, that's what my monthly Care Plan is for. I'll handle everything so you don't have to.
